Protect the organization's rights in contract negotiations, settlements and litigation. Acquire deep knowledge of the industry and the specific business practices of this particular business within UnitedHealth Group so as to best advise senior business leaders. Provides a full range of legal advice and services and may specialize in one of more areas such as mergers and acquisitions, transactional work, commercial law, contracts law, benefit law, insurance law, regulatory and compliance. You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage defensive litigation and arbitration for the UnitedHealthcare segment
  • Identify, select, and proactively supervise outside counsel in connection with all aspects of litigation and arbitration
  • Represent the organization at depositions, mediations, hearings, arbitrations, and trials
  • May provide legal counsel in connection with internal investigations, subpoenas, and responses to government inquiries
  • Protect the organization's rights in connection with disputes, arbitration, and litigation
  • Develop, maintain, and leverage deep knowledge of healthcare law and the managed care industry, including UnitedHealthcare's commercial and government programs lines of business, in connection with job duties
  • Work collaboratively with other areas of the Legal Department, including the Clinical, Contracting, Transactional, Operational, Regulatory, and Compliance teams
  • Provide legal advice and services on issues concerning the rights, obligations, risks, and privileges of the organization You'll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in. Required Qualifications:
    • Juris Doctorate degree
    • 7+ years of complex commercial litigation experience at a law firm and/or in-house legal department
    • Experience evaluating and determining best legal course of action to meet business needs
    • Good standing in one or more jurisdictions

      • Significant trial, arbitration and negotiation experience in complex commercial, consumer, or class action litigation
      • First chair trial experience
      • Am Law 200 law firm experience
      • Experience collaborating across matrixed business and legal environment
      • Experience providing advice to senior business leaders
      • Knowledge of healthcare law, including ERISA and/or Knox-Keene
      • Ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates, internal business partners, and external company contacts
      • Ability to collaborate and work in a team environment Required Competencies:

The salary range for Connecticut/Nevada/New York City residents is $113,500 to $218,100.
