The Funeral Service Department is responsible for ensuring that every funeral exceeds the expectations of the families we serve. Whether the family chooses a traditional funeral service or a completely individualized ceremony, our goal is to accommodate those we serve, provide professional guidance and support throughout the service.Our Funeral Service Directors prepare for and direct the funeral service according to the wishes of the Client Family as stated on the MA's and Director's papers.Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and delegate duties to staff assigned to services.
  • Prepare for funeral service using the information from the MA form, Service Sheet and Service Directors papers. Perform last minute changes. Verify any last minute changes or service details with Memorial Counselors and Service Arrangements, as needed.
  • Interact with client family and officiant to ensure that the client family's needs are taken care of.
  • Confirm decedent verification with associated paperwork. Places casket at service location prior to service and arranges floral offerings and lights around the casket, and ensures proper set-up for all services. Discuss order of service with officiant prior to start of service.
  • Respectfully and compassionately directs and escorts client family members and visitors to church, or chapel. Facilitate the distribution of memory folders and prayer cards. If needed, assist casket bearers and give instructions, pulling flower cards and note the description of the arrangement for the family.
  • Responsible for personal effects that need to be given to families, in addition to register book, left over memory folders, prayer cards, and confirm if any jewelry or personal effects are to be placed with the decedent or remain with the family.
  • Director must have complete knowledge of all aspects of funeral service as well as all religious set-ups. For Military services, will ensure that the flag is properly folded and presented to the client family member. Will fold flag if needed.
  • Ability to train Assistant Directors and Service Assistants.
  • Participate in the daily task of ground check and providing the department with a detailed map of the interment sites and route of the funeral procession.
  • Cleans company vehicles, fill company vehicles with gasoline and stocks them.
  • Assist in carrying casket.
  • Assist office staff as needed.
  • In addition to the responsibilities stated above, this position entails being able to perform all job responsibilities assigned to an Assistant Service Director also.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, cultural, religious and fraternal requirements as they relate to Funeralization.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with individuals at every level within the organization.
  • Ability to recognize and understand the emotional psychological effects of death and comprehend the effect of our client families.
  • Ability to maintain an acceptable level of morale within the department.Requirements
    • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
    • Six months customer service experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Valid California Drivers License. Must maintain a good driving record.
    • Ability to perform a one handed lift of 100 pounds from floor to waist level from the left and right sides.
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as director's papers, service sheets, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
    • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
